PANAMA/COSTA RICA: Dramatic plunge in migration through the Darién

On 13 March Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino announced the closure of migration centres which have been functioning since 2016 in the Darién Gap, the lawless jungle area bordering Colombia that hitherto served as a key migration route northwards. Mulino’s announcement came after Panama’s migration authority (SNM) revealed that in February, just 408 migrants crossed the Darién Gap, a 99% drop on the 37,166 who crossed in February 2024.
