Region reacts to Trump tariffs

On 2 April, dubbed “Liberation Day” by US President Donald Trump, the Washington administration set out the biggest and most abrupt pivot away from free trade seen in the last century. A week later, on 9 April, many of the changes were put on a 90-day ‘pause’ to allow more time for negotiation, but the lowest, ‘baseline’, tariff affecting most Latin American countries remains in place, leaving governments scrambling to limit the damage.
