*Brazil’s government has submitted the 2026 budget guidelines bill (PLDO) to congress, which includes fiscal targets such as an annual primary surplus of R$34.3bn (US$5.8bn), equivalent to 0.25% of GDP. This represents a more ambitious goal compared to 2024 and 2025, when the government’s fiscal target was for zero deficit. The 2026 PLDO proposes a spending limit of R$2.43tn. The bill will now proceed to be reviewed by the federal deputies and senators of the joint budget committee (CMO). According to a press release from the lower house, the aim is for the PLDO to be approved before congress goes into recess on 17 July and for the government to submit its main budget legislation (PLOA) by the end of August. The legislator appointed to oversee the passage of this year’s PLDO is federal deputy
Carlos Zarattini, of the ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT).
