BRAZIL: Tax breaks and cheap credit are to kick start growth

The administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is redoubling its efforts to kick-start Brazil’s economy ahead of next year’s general elections. Following last year’s GDP expansion of 3.4%, Latin America’s largest economy is projected to grow by only 2% this year and 1.6% next year, according to the latest central bank Focus surveys. The strategy is to stimulate domestic demand by boosting the purchasing power of consumers, especially lower-income families.
