Just over half of the 513 members of Brazil’s lower chamber of congress have signed an official request to fast-track the review of a bill that proposes pardoning the far-right rioters who stormed the seats of government on 8 January 2023. The main backer of this bill is the right-wing Partido Liberal (PL), the party of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), but aside from the 90 PL deputies who signed the request, over a hundred of the signatures came from lawmakers affiliated with centre-right parties such as União Brasil (União) and Progressistas (PP), which hold cabinet ministries in the left-of-centre government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
