CHILE: Vodanovic enters the fray

The field for Chile’s presidential elections in November is growing ever larger. Senator and Partido Socialista (PS) president Paulina Vodanovic became the latest candidate to launch her presidential bid on 12 April. In the days since, Vodanovic has worked to distance herself from the government of President Gabriel Boric, despite the PS forming part of the ruling left-wing alliance. This signals a blow to Boric, who had hoped to go into the elections with a united left-wing coalition operating in harmony with his government. However, there is still a decent prospect of electoral unity following a meeting between former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010, 2014-2018), also of the PS, and the other ruling alliance candidates on 14 April.
