*The Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agrarian development ministry, has released its latest estimates for the 2024/2025 sugar cane harvest, which shows a projection of 676.96m tonnes (t). The final figures for this harvest cycle are still being calculated, but if this latest Conab estimate turns out to be the total figure, it would represent a 5.1% decrease from the 2023/2024 harvest. In a press release, Conab attributed this annual drop to unfavourable climate conditions, such as lower rainfall and high temperatures in the central-southern part of the country. The southeast, which is Brazil’s main region for sugar cane cultivation, registered an estimated harvest of 439.6m t, down 6.3% from the 2023/2024 cycle. The estimate for the centre-west came to 145.3m t, marking a slight annual decrease of 0.2%. The sugar cane harvest period of the northeast region is in its closing stage, and Conab estimates indicate an expected harvest of 54.4m t, which would be down 3.7% from the previous cycle. The estimate for the south also shows an annual decrease, with 33.6m t (-13.2%).
