Jorge Díaz, the deputy secretary to Uruguay’s presidency, has warned that the new leftist government led by President
Yamandú Orsi, which took office at the start of March, has inherited the largest fiscal deficit in 35 years. These comments were made in a press conference following a recent cabinet meeting after which Díaz said that reports from all ministries suggested concerns over the country’s fiscal situation. He said that a document from the ministry of economy and finance estimated that, due to factors such as unpaid debts, the deficit stands at around US$1bn.
