Migration can be added to the list of issues driving tensions between Mexico’s government led by Claudia Sheinbaum and the US administration of President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum has drawn praise for her handling of Trump, managing to stave off the full force of his tariff threats and garnering compliments from the US president. However, recently the two governments have butted heads over several issues, with the latest being US government adverts about illegal migration that were broadcast in Mexico and which Sheinbaum has termed as “discriminatory”.
