“The last Panamanian that dared to defy the US, taking to the podium with a machete and provocative declarations, did not get on very well, nor did the country,” Panama’s foreign minister Javier Martínez-Acha said during an appearance before the national assembly on 29 April. Martínez-Acha’s allusion to the fate of President Manuel Noriega, who declared a state of war with the US and was swiftly deposed in the ‘Operation Just Cause’ military invasion in 1989, came in response to questions from legislators urging the Panamanian government to stand up to the US over threats from President Donald Trump to “take back” the Panama Canal.
