In brief: Cuba and Russia shore up relations

*Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel has met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow, during a three-day visit to Russia marking 65 years of diplomatic relations. The meeting, which was also attended by Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, among a string of other officials, did not produce details of any new agreements. However, a statement by Russian state news agency Tass detailing the Cuban delegation’s visit cites Lavrov as underlining the importance of tourism in bilateral cooperation, saying that 186,000 Russians visited Cuba in 2024, which he describes as a “new milestone”. The Tass report also cites Lavrov as saying that the two countries collaborate in sectors such as education, energy, industry, agriculture, technology, culture, and sports and that “the extension of the portfolio of bilateral investment initiatives is under discussion, with their total number currently surpassing 100”. Meanwhile the Cuban government released a report in response to the meeting in which it highlighted a special document signed in 2023 entitled ‘Plan 2030’ through which Russian companies had expressed a willingness to invest over US$1bn in Cuba’s economy.
