With less than a month until judicial elections are due on 1 June, legislators from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) – the very party that pushed through the reform that established the elections – have requested the cancellation of over 20 candidacies. This comes two weeks after the senate president, Morena’s Gerardo Fernández Noroña, admitted that some candidates competing in the elections may be unsuitable due to criminal links and other issues [WR-25-16]. The cancellation request, which looks unlikely to be accepted by the national electoral institute (INE), represents a further blow to the credibility of the judicial electoral process, which had already been under much scrutiny from the political opposition and international institutions. A further challenge to the judicial reform was presented before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) last week, adding to pressure as the elections approach.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1152 words.
