BRAZIL: Renewed institutional tensions over coup plot case

Brazil’s lower chamber of congress has approved a motion to suspend legal proceedings against federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem, of the right-wing Partido Liberal (PL). Ramagem stands accused of participating in an alleged plot to launch a coup in 2022 to reverse the election defeat that year of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). In late March the supreme court (STF) officially declared Bolsonaro, Ramagem, and several other alleged conspirators as defendants in the high-profile coup plot case [WR-25-12], but now congress has complicated the process by exercising its constitutional powers that allow it to reverse some judicial decisions, which could reignite tensions between congress and the STF.
