In brief: Brazil’s inflation slows in monthly terms

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the official inflation figures for April, showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.43% and an annual rate of 5.53%. This latest monthly rate is down from the 0.56% inflation registered for March but up from 0.38% in April 2024. The annual rate in April also marks an increase from 5.48% in March. Of the nine categories of products and services measured by the Ibge, eight saw a monthly rise in prices in April. The greatest monthly rises were registered in health and personal care (+1.18%) and clothing (+1.02%). The only category to see monthly deflation was transport (-0.38%). In a press release, the Ibge highlighted that food inflation has slowed in monthly terms, dropping from 1.17% in March to 0.82% in April. However, the food and drink category still exerted the biggest impact on the overall monthly inflation rate of 0.43% in April, with the category accounting for 0.18 percentage points of the overall price increase.
