*Argentina’s government led by President Javier Milei has announced that the monthly minimum wage would rise to Ar$302,600 (US$268) and hourly minimum wage to Ar$1,513, backdated from 1 April. The government announced the minimum wage increase via decree, with further increases announced from 1 May of Ar$308,200 per month, from 1 June of Ar$313,400, from 1 July of Ar$317,800, and from 1 August of Ar$322,000, when the hourly minimum wage will reach Ar$1,610. In the decree, the government noted that no consensus had been reached following “an extensive exchange of opinions, during which each sector made its presentations and deliberations”. Minimum wage was one of many issues fuelling protests by Argentina’s umbrella trade unions on 1 May. The unions had proposed a monthly minimum wage of over double those enacted via the decree, indicating that more protest action is likely. The minimum wage for April is up 1.94% on Ar$296,832 in March, under the monthly inflation rate of 3.7% in March.
