María Teresa Mercado, has paid a two-day visit to Spain where she co-chaired a meeting of the Mexico-Spain permanent political subcommittee, with
Susana Sumelzo, Spain’s state secretary for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish around the world. A Mexican government press release states that the committee, which meets annually, aims to strengthen dialogue, and deepen cooperation between the two countries. Sumelzo wrote on social media that the meeting addressed key issues like “
strengthening political dialogue, economic relations, and promoting our common language”. Also present at the meeting were Mexico’s ambassador to Spain,
Quirino Ordaz, and Spain’s ambassador to Mexico,
Juan Duarte Cuadrado. According to figures from Spain’s foreign ministry, Spanish foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mexico amounted to US$57.49bn from 2006-March 2024, making it the second biggest foreign investor in Mexico after the US (US$239.01bn). Key recipients of Spanish FDI in Mexico are banking, energy, infrastructure, tourism, and telecommunications. There are over 7,000 Spanish companies with Spanish capital in Mexico, according to the same source.
