*Brazil’s mining and energy minister,
Alexandre Silveira, has called for closer energy cooperation between Brazil and the Southern Cone countries. Speaking during a gathering in Brasília of energy officials from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and representatives from the Latin American Energy Organisation (Olade), Silveira said that natural gas is vital to President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reindustrialisation plan for Brazil and called for tighter energy integration to boost the supply of gas and lower prices. Silveira highlighted the potential role of Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale gas fields, saying that
“Argentina is the keystone in this strategy”. Brazil is aiming to import up to 30m cubic metres of gas per day from Argentina by 2030. Silveira hailed progress on the liberalisation of gas export prices from Argentina and on easing taxes and regulations on the transport of gas.
“With free negotiation of prices between Argentine producers and Brazilian consumers, the market can take off in the short term,” he said, adding that
“it doesn’t help to bring in cheap gas from Argentina or Bolivia if it becomes expensive upon entering the country”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 181 words.
