*A Guatemalan trade delegation, which includes government officials such as the ministers of foreign affairs,
Carlos Ramiro Martínez, and economy,
Gabriela García, as well as private sector representatives, has held meetings with various US organisations during the second day of a three-day visit aimed at consolidating Guatemala as a “
strategic partner” of Washington. It was also there to address
the 10% tariffs which the US administration led by President
Donald Trump imposed on imported foreign goods (including from Guatemala) on 2 April, a policy which received a significant setback yesterday when the US Court of International Trade ruled that the president does not have the authority to implement tariffs unilaterally. Yesterday the delegation met representatives of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), a Washington-based trade association that represents domestic textile manufacturers, the Office of Textiles and Apparel (Otexa), a US government body, the US Chamber of Commerce, and think tanks including the Atlantic Council and Council of the Americas, among others. The previous day, the delegation met representatives from the Office of the US Trade Representative, the American Apparel and Footwear Association, which represents the apparel and footwear industry, the US Grains Council, a non-profit dedicated to increasing profitability for US farmers through export market development, and the American Farm Bureau Federation, one of the US agriculture sector’s largest lobby groups.
