BOLIVIA | Chinese and Russian lithium contracts in doubt. On 27 May a court in the Bolivian department of Potosí ordered congress to suspend the approval process for lithium production contracts with Russia’s Uranium One Group and China’s CBC Investments Ltd. The judicial order came in response to an appeal against the contracts by the indigenous organisation Central Única Provincial de Comunidades Originarias de Nor Lípez (CUPCONL), which argued that the projects’ environmental impact had not been properly assessed. In response, state lithium company Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB), which signed the contracts with the Russian and Chinese firms, said that it had not been properly notified of the legal action. YLB said: “When we’re notified in line with the law, we will present a report with a thorough technical and legal argument demonstrating that no individual or collective rights have been violated, including the rights of indigenous peasant peoples”.
