BOLIVIA: Morales dials up the pressure with roadblocks

As was to be expected, Bolivia’s former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) has not taken his exclusion from the August general elections lying down. On 2 June his supporters began blocking roads around the country to demand that he be allowed to register his presidential candidacy – something which electoral officials insist is impossible as it would put Morales in breach of term limits. Given that previous campaigns of roadblocks by Morales’ followers have dragged on for weeks and caused serious economic damage, the protests could pose major problems for President Luis Arce and Eduardo del Castillo, the presidential candidate for the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) – particularly in light of a stark warning from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over Bolivia’s economic direction.
