President Gabriel Boric delivered his final official state-of-the-nation address to congress on 1 June. Boric, whose term concludes in March 2026, flagged up two initiatives that will ruffle feathers in the right-wing opposition ahead of presidential and congressional elections on 16 November: one to relax abortion restrictions and one to end the privileges of those serving sentences for human rights abuses during the 1973-1990 military dictatorship at the Punta Peuco prison.
