BRAZIL: Far-right lawmaker declared as fugitive

Supreme court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes issued a preventive arrest warrant on 4 June for federal deputy Carla Zambelli, of the right-wing Partido Liberal (PL). In mid-May Zambelli was sentenced to 10 years in prison for instigating a plot to hack into the computer systems of judicial authorities, but she was free to travel while awaiting the results of the appeals against her conviction and reportedly left Brazil in late May. Although Zambelli has given interviews to the press in which she insisted that she was not fleeing the country to avoid serving her sentence, reports in the media have interpreted the arrest order as a warning against far-right figures, such as former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), who have been accused of crimes against Brazil’s institutions.
