In brief: Brazil’s inflation slows in May

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its consumer price index (Ipca), which showed a monthly inflation rate of 0.26% in May. This marks a deceleration from 0.43% in April and from 0.46% in May 2024. The accumulated annual inflation rate for the 12 months until May 2025 stood at 5.32%, down from 5.53% registered for the 12 months until April. Of the nine categories of products and services measured by the Ibge, seven registered a monthly rise in prices in May this year. The greatest increases were seen in housing (+1.19%) and health & personal care (0.54%). The two categories that registered monthly deflation were household items (-0.27%) and transport (-0.37%). Within the housing category, the Ibge highlighted that the monthly price increase for the category was mainly driven by a rise in household electricity bills (+3.62%). Meanwhile, the monthly deflation for the transport category was mainly driven by price decreases for air travel (-11.31%) and fuels (-0.72%).
