BOLIVIA: Tensions rise over roadblocks

Political tensions in Bolivia were ratcheted up another notch on 11 June when three police officers and a demonstrator were killed during protests by followers of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019). Amid escalating violence and concerns over the economic impact of roadblocks by protesters, President Luis Arce’s government is taking an increasingly hard line. There is no clear path to de-escalation, with the electoral authorities adamant that they will not heed Morales’ call to ease the presidential term limits that prevent him from competing in the August elections.
