The US government led by President Donald Trump is maintaining its offensive against Mexico’s main drug cartels. On 9 June the US announced new sanctions targeting Los Chapitos, a faction of the Cártel de Sinaloa that it claims plays a major role in the production and trafficking of fentanyl. Los Chapitos has been severely diminished in recent years, with two of its leaders currently in prison in the US and other senior figures targeted by law enforcement, while an ongoing civil war with a rival cartel faction is draining its resources [WR-25-21].
