MEXICO: OAS slams judicial elections

Election observers from the Organization of American States (OAS) have voiced serious concerns about the unprecedented and controversial judicial elections that took place in Mexico on 1 June. In a preliminary report released on 6 June, the OAS observers flagged multiple issues, including extremely low levels of citizen participation, the reported use of ‘cheat sheets’ to favour certain candidates, the complexity of the vote, and high levels of polarisation surrounding it. The conclusions have drawn the sharp rejection of Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which has hailed the elections as a complete success [WR-25-22]. The OAS criticisms may provide ammunition to opposition parties, which have termed the elections a failure and are calling for their annulment.
