*Mexico’s anti-trust and competition watchdog Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica (Cofece) has closed a case against US technology giant Google, concluding a multi-year investigation. Cofece initiated the investigation in 2020 to determine whether Google’s digital advertising services in Mexico, via its search page as well as third-party websites, included monopolistic practices. Specifically, Cofece was investigating the possible existence of ‘tied sales’, in which a customer is conditioned or forced to purchase one product in order to contract another. In this case, it was analysed whether Google conditioned the purchase of advertising on its main search page to the purchase of advertising on other web pages. Following the investigation, Cofece concluded that there was no real obligation or imposition by Google on users to contract both services. Cofece closed the case and cleared the company from any potential fines.
