“Haiti should not be eternally punished for having been the first country in the Americas to achieve independence,” Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, while hosting a meeting in Brasília with political leaders from across the Caribbean on 13 June. Lula bemoaned the “abandonment and indifference” of much of the international community to Haiti’s plight. His comments came shortly after the new secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, sought to marshal support for Haiti: “Nowhere in the Hemisphere are democracy and the rule of law, security, human rights and development more threatened than in Haiti”. Ramdin stressed that “Haiti will be high on our agenda for the foreseeable future”. Translating words into action, however, remains a challenge.End of preview - This article contains approximately 909 words.
