URUGUAY: Latest poverty rates aren’t much to celebrate

Uruguay, which had long prided itself on being one of the most equitable and prosperous countries in Latin America, delved into collective soul-searching when the rate of poverty began rising in recent years. So, when the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), the national statistics bureau, published its latest report on poverty in May, it was scrutinized for any insights that could be gleaned to help shape policy and put the country back on track.
