*Brazil’s agriculture ministry has notified the World Organization for Animal Health (Woah) that it is free of avian influenza (bird flu), after going over 28 days without a new case on any commercial farm in the country. The first and only case was detected
on 16 May on a commercial poultry farm in Montenegro municipality, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, and the case was confirmed on 22 May. Just one case detected among commercial poultry is enough to prompt emergency sanitary measures and to halt exports. In May dozens of countries
suspended or imposed restrictions on shipments of chicken meat from Brazil, including Brazil’s largest trade partner, China. In a government press release, Brazil’s agriculture minister,
Carlos Fávaro, is cited as highlighting the
“robustness” and
“efficiency” of the country’s animal health systems, which followed the protocols to contain and monitor bird flu cases. Fávaro expressed hope that the declaration to the Woah will be a step towards gradually resuming poultry exports.
