Claudia Sheinbaum has inaugurated a new combined cycle power plant in San Luis Potosí state, one of some 60 plants her government plans to build over her six-year term to boost the capacity of the state-owned electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Sheinbaum said the plants would add 26,000 megawatts to the CFE’s generation capacity following a constitutional reform
passed in October 2024 to strengthen the role of the CFE, as well as the state-run oil company, Pemex, in Mexico’s energy matrix. According to the government, the new plant in Villa de Reyes municipality, San Luis Potosí, had a total public investment of US$350m and will deliver electricity to 2,400 homes in a sustainable manner, reducing the emission of pollutants by 53% and allowing a 40% saving in water used for its operation. CFE’s director general,
Emilia Esther Calleja Alor, said the construction of the power plant generated more than 1,200 jobs and the plant is going to produce around 3,500 megawatt-hours a year. Calleja noted that US$12.3bn would be invested from 2024-2030 to increase Mexico’s electricity capacity.
