*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its figures for the country’s retail sales in May, showing a monthly drop in sales volume of 0.2%. This marks the second consecutive decline in sales, following the monthly decrease of 0.3% registered for April. Compared to May 2024 the total sales volume rose by 2.1% and the accumulated sales volume for the 12 months through May 2025 was up 3.0% from the preceding 12-month period. In a press release, the Ibge suggested that the monthly decreases in April and May do not necessarily mean a significant slump in consumer confidence but could be viewed in relation to the high bar set by the March result, when a monthly rise of 0.8% was registered. Of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge, five saw a monthly rise in sales in May. The categories with the greatest monthly increases were office supplies and information and communications equipment (+3.0%) and furniture and home appliances (+2.0%). It is worth pointing out that if there were a crisis in consumer confidence, there would likely be fewer purchases of relatively expensive items such as electronics or furniture.
