Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has condemned “xenophobic” behaviour at protests that took place in Mexico City (CDMX) on 4 July against gentrification. Hundreds protested in the upmarket neighbourhoods of Condesa and Roma, which are particularly popular with tourists and expats, against mass tourism and the rising cost of living. While both Sheinbaum and CDMX mayor Clara Brugada, who also hails from the federally ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), rejected certain actions and views expressed at the protests, they also recognised the need to address the displacement of Mexicans from areas of the capital.End of preview - This article contains approximately 671 words.
