Claudia Sheinbaum has said that in a 15 July telephone call with Canada’s Prime Minister
Mark Carney they had agreed to strengthen trade collaboration. Noting that US President
Donald Trump has threatened Mexico with tariffs of 30%, and Canada with tariffs of 35%, as of 1 August, Sheinbaum said that
“we both agree that the USMCA [US-Mexico-Canada Agreement] needs to be respected”, adding that she and Carney
“shared our experiences about the letter we received from President Trump” which announced the new tariffs. A statement from Carney’s office said that the pair
“discussed how to strengthen the Canadian and Mexican economies and enhance their global competitiveness” and agreed to remain in close contact.
