Claudia Sheinbaum has announced an investment of M$21bn (US$1.13bn) to be implemented from this year to reinforce the state-run IMSS-Bienestar healthcare system. Speaking in Zacatecas state, Sheinbaum said the investment would be made between now and 2027 to provide new equipment, modernise existing hospitals and build new ones, and to hire 1,000 specialist doctors and 1,900 nurses. In Zacatecas alone, M$621m will be spent this year on new equipment and M$1.1bn on the construction of new hospitals.
“We are guided by one principle, one maxim: health, access to health, is not a commodity for those who can pay for their healthcare; it is not a privilege for a select few. Access to health is a right of the Mexican people, and the Mexican people will have the best public health system,” said Sheinbaum.
