Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has attended the inauguration event of the GNA II thermoelectric power plant in the municipality of Porto do Açu, Rio de Janeiro state, which forms part of what the Brazilian government describes as the largest thermal power complex in Latin America. The new GNA II facility received R$7bn (US$1.25bn) in investment and has an installed capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW). According to government estimates, GNA II could account for 10% of Brazil’s total energy generated by natural gas. The facility is expected to operate with a
“combined cycle”, with up to 50% hydrogen as a substitute to natural gas.
