*Colombia’s President
Gustavo Petro has announced that he has asked the agriculture ministry to purchase excess food in the country and distribute it to areas suffering from hunger. Petro said that
“it’s shameful that there are still 2m people going hungry in Colombia” and blamed this on the lack of an institutional plan to tackle the problem, calling on the national development bank (Findeter) to accelerate the construction of food storage centres. His comments came after the publication on 28 July of the latest ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World’ (Sofi) report by the United Nations World Food Programme, which stated that from 2022-2024 there were 2.0m undernourished people in Colombia (3.9% of the population), 2.6m severely food insecure people (5.0%), and 14.6m moderately food insecure people (27.8%). These figures were down from 2.2m undernourished people from 2021-2023 (4.2%), 2.8m severely food insecure people (5.3%), and 16.3m moderately food insecure people (30.7%).
