*Chile’s Finance Minister Mario Marcel has said the decision by the US government led by President Donald Trump to exempt copper input materials such as ores, concentrates, and cathodes from a new 50% tariff on the metal is “good news” for Chile, a major copper exporter, as well as the US manufacturing industry. Marcel was speaking after Trump signed a proclamation imposing a previously announced 50% tariff on copper imports. However, the final tariff only applies to semi-finished products, such as copper pipes and wires, and copper-intensive derivate products, such as pipe fittings, cables, and electrical components, exempting copper input materials such as copper ores, concentrates, mattes, cathodes, and anodes, as well as copper scrap. Speaking at a press conference alongside Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren and Mining Minister Aurora Williams, Marcel said that the decision was the result of coordinated work between the public and private sector and reflected Chile’s position as “a reliable, quality and transparent supplier in foreign trade”. Van Klaveren noted that the tariffs would not apply to the main copper products that Chile exports to the US, saying that 99.9% of these are copper cathodes.
