The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Mary Lawlor, urged authorities in El Salvador “to change course” on 28 July. Lawlor took to social media to express concern that “under the interminable state of exception, and with the recently approved foreign agents law, the climate for the defence and promotion of human rights in the country has deteriorated significantly”. Her admonition came on the same day that community leaders and human rights activists in El Salvador cautioned that the government led by President Nayib Bukele may be preparing “a new stronger wave of violence” against them.
