NICARAGUA: China laps up mining concessions

The Nicaraguan government awarded an open cast mining concession on 29 July covering 47,410 hectares in the municipalities of El Castillo, in the province of Río San Juan, and Bluefields, in the Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Sur (RACCS). The concession, which is near the shared border with Costa Rica, was awarded to Thomas Metal SA, a Nicaragua-registered but Chinese-controlled firm.
