COLOMBIA: Uribe Turbay’s death raises concern over 2026 elections

A Colombian senator and presidential aspirant, Miguel Uribe Turbay, died in hospital on 11 August, 65 days after being shot in the head at a campaign event in the capital Bogotá. His death was condemned across the domestic and international political spectrum. With seven months to go before the 2026 election season begins with legislative elections next March, there are fears that Colombian democracy will face an increased threat of violence.
