In July, the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a US think tank, published a comprehensive report on how the Caribbean can best manage the transition to renewable energy. The report – ‘A Caribbean Regional Transition Scenario’ – maps a way for the Caribbean to develop energy independence and resilience based on solar, wind, and geothermal heat. Such a transition would move the Caribbean away from its expensive dependence on imported fossil fuels for electricity generation. Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries import an estimated 87% of their oil against a global average of 21%, and electricity prices in the Caribbean are among the most expensive in the world. The RMI report identifies a path towards 100% renewable energy for the Caribbean by 2035.End of preview - This article contains approximately 533 words.
