Brics summit points to uncertain future

Brazil hosted the leaders’ summit of the Brics group of developing countries in July, out of which came a joint declaration that sought to highlight long-running priorities for Brazilian diplomacy, such as international cooperation on poverty reduction and climate action. China’s President Xi Jinping did not attend this year’s summit, which may be interpreted as a blow for the group, but it could also be argued that this allowed Brics leaders such as Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi from being overshadowed by Xi.
