MEXICO: Sheinbaum boosts ties with Guatemala

Despite sharing many ideological similarities and a border of almost 900km, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum until recently had not held an official meeting with Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo. This changed on 15 August, when Sheinbaum travelled to the town of Santa Elena, in Guatemala’s northern department of Petén, to meet with her Guatemalan counterpart. The pair discussed issues related to border security, migration, rail interconnectivity, and electricity. Later that day, they both travelled to the Mayan archaeological site of Calakmul in Mexico’s southeastern state of Campeche to unveil an environmental project with fellow neighbouring country Belize, in a further sign of regional cooperation.
