BOLIVIA: Judicial realignment ahead of presidential transition

The political change that is sweeping Bolivia may now be having an impact on the country’s judiciary. Long accused of aligning themselves with the power of the day, judges have switched their stance in the two weeks since the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) suffered a crushing defeat in the 17 August general elections. With two conservative candidates facing off in the second round on 19 October, courts have begun issuing rulings favouring leading right-wing figures such as former president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) and Luis Fernando Camacho, former governor of Santa Cruz (2021-2024) and leader of the far-right Creemos.
