GUYANA: PPP/C bids for re-election

Voters in Guyana will go to the polls on 1 September to elect a new government. President Irfaan Ali is seeking re-election at the head of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which came to power in 2020. The main challenge will be provided by the big tent opposition alliance A Partnership for National Unity (Apnu), under Aubrey Norton, the leader of its largest constituent party, the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R). It is a crucial election to win given Guyana’s game-changing oil wealth.
