MEXICO: Challenges persist to tackling gender violence

On 12 August Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum led the inauguration of the 16th regional conference on women of Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held in Mexico City (CDMX) from 12-15 August. In her speech, Sheinbaum recalled her presidential inauguration, when she had declared that it was “the time for women”, reiterating at the conference that “this is not only the time for women in Mexico, but throughout the world”. While Sheinbaum highlighted the measures her administration has implemented to further women’s rights, many challenges remain for the government, particularly in relation to tackling gender violence.
