Is there a connection between crime and migration?

Over the last decade many Latin American politicians have successfully attracted voters by appealing to citizen concerns over inward migration, safety, and crime. The issue has also loomed large in the United States where two-time President Donald Trump has used it to his advantage, for example by appealing to nativism, extending the border wall between the US and Mexico, and, as we have seen, by preparing the ground for mass deportations. Many populist politicians have reaped benefits from promoting mano dura (iron fist) anti-crime and anti-immigration policies.
