HAITI: Will massacre spur response?

“The Republic will stay on its feet and the gangs will fall,” the Haitian government said in a statement on 15 September following the massacre of more than 40 people in a fishing village north of the capital Port-au-Prince days earlier. The government’s outward confidence belies the fact that the Republic is tottering, however, and to stand upright again it is likely to need a fresh injection of international assistance, which could, in the short-term at least, bring more bloodshed and violence.
