EL SALVADOR: Opposition gears up for elections

The president of El Salvador’s right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), Carlos García Saade, released a video on social media on 17 September expressing his conviction that his party is ready to contest elections in 2027. Presidential elections will be held two years earlier than scheduled to align them with legislative and municipal elections after a constitutional reform in late July pushed through the legislative assembly by President Nayib Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas (NI) party, which holds a thumping majority. Despite Saade’s confidence, dislodging Bukele from power, with his total control over all state institutions, could now be as difficult as shifting Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro. The added complication for Arena is that, unlike Maduro, Bukele remains popular after transforming the public security situation, albeit through the indefinite extension of a state of exception based on mass incarceration with no due process.
